Walters Aims for 2026 World Cup, NRL Return

Kevin Walters, head coach of the Australian Kangaroos, has expressed his desire to continue in his position through the 2026 Rugby League World Cup before potentially returning to the NRL.

After an unexpected dismissal from the Brisbane Broncos at the end of 2024, Walters took over the Kangaroos on a temporary contract for the 2025 Ashes Series. He replaced Mal Meninga, who stepped down to get ready for the Perth Bears' inaugural season in 2027.

Guiding the Australian team to a 3-0 series victory against a struggling England side, Walters' performance was seen as a trial for a longer contract, likely leading to his securing a position for the upcoming World Cup. In an interview with Wide World of Sports, he expressed enthusiasm about the event being held in Australia.

"Obviously the World Cup's on next year, so I'd like to be part of that, here in Australia, especially in front of the crowds and the people," he stated, adding, "That's something I would very much look forward to."

Despite his commitment to the World Cup, Walters indicated he does not see himself as the long-term coach for Australia, hinting at a preference to return to the NRL, where he considers himself a 'career coach.'
