Australia coach Kevin Walters has rejected claims that the Kangaroos' whitewash series victory over England was simply "a walk in the park," asserting his respect for the English team after the third Test.
The series concluded with Australia triumphing 3-0 following a 30-8 victory in the intense final match at Headingley. England initially matched the Aussies closely for 60 minutes, but three late tries by Australia inflated the final score.
In his post-match press conference, Walters emphasized the challenging nature of the series, commending England for their performance in the first Ashes series in over two decades.
"Some of the Australian press have been saying 'it's like a walk in the park'. Well, come over and walk in the park against the English, and see how you go … These were tough matches," Walters said.
He added, "If you talk to the players, they've got nothing but respect for them and the way they play their football." Walters noted that "it's a different style of game here, and it's great that the boys can experience that now."
He continued, "Because for 20-odd years, the Ashes haven't been played, and now these series need to continue on a regular basis for both countries to get better and develop better as rugby league-playing nations."
One significant distinction between the two teams throughout the series was their defensive capabilities, with Australia conceding only two tries over the three Test matches.
