Walsh's setback opens door for Tabuai-Fidow's rise

Reece Walsh suffers State of Origin blow as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow makes irresistible case

Reece Walsh faced a setback as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow made a compelling case for the Queensland No.1 jersey in State of Origin 3 by scoring four tries for the Dolphins.

With Maroons coach Billy Slater needing to make a pivotal decision following Kalyn Ponga's foot injury, the pressure is on to select the best fullback.

Reports indicate that Walsh, who has held the fullback position for Queensland in 2023 and 2024, may now face competition from Tabuai-Fidow, who has garnered significant support from fans and commentators.

Slater could opt to shift Tabuai-Fidow to fullback and bring in a winger, likely Murray Taulagi from the Cowboys.

In his last chance to impress, Walsh put in a solid performance with a try assist, four tackle-breaks, and 126 running metres during the Broncos' victory over the Warriors.

Nevertheless, Tabuai-Fidow outshined him with his extraordinary display-22 runs for 263 metres, breaking seven tackles, and scoring four tries in a dominating win against South Sydney.

This display has led many to believe that Tabuai-Fidow could be the best fullback option for Queensland, even with Ponga available.

Although Tabuai-Fidow has previously played as a centre or winger for Queensland, he showcased his capabilities as a fullback during Game 1 of last year's series when he stepped in for the concussed Walsh.

After Saturday's match, Tabuai-Fidow expressed his desire, stating, "To have that No.1 on my back, would be super special for me."

Slater's decision now weighs heavily, as he evaluates the prospects of Walsh against the standout performance from Tabuai-Fidow for the essential Origin decider.
