Matty Johns has praised Selwyn Cobbo, likening him to league legend Greg Inglis after his impressive performance at fullback, replacing Reece Walsh for the Broncos.
Cobbo shone in the recent match against the Bulldogs, contributing a try assist, four tackle breaks, and 151 run meters in a commanding 42-18 victory.
Former Broncos player Justin Hodges also commended Cobbo's steadiness, contrasting it with Walsh's inconsistency.
With Walsh out for at least a month due to a knee injury, Cobbo is poised to further showcase his talent, starting with an upcoming match against the Panthers.
Johns highlighted that Cobbo's transition has provided the Broncos with a "point of difference" in their attack.
While Walsh is a significant asset to the team, many agree with Hodges that Cobbo's presence simplifies the Broncos' offensive strategy, enabling other players to excel.
Johns noted that Cobbo's powerful running and imposing stature bring a unique dimension to the role, reminiscent of Inglis during his peak years.
Discussing the evolution of fullbacks in modern rugby league, he pointed out that the trend has shifted towards smaller, faster players, attributing defensive challenges to the faster pace of the game.
However, Cobbo's style offers a throwback to the "GI" type of fullback, providing a powerful option that disrupts traditional defenses.
"I did like him, it's been a bit of a point of difference with other fullbacks this year...
Cobbo was very good the other night, there were just so many shades of GI in the way he moves," Johns stated.
This shift in dynamics could present a significant decision for Broncos coach Michael Maguire when Walsh returns.
