New Zealand Warriors utility Dylan Walker has been granted early release from his three-year deal on compassionate grounds to return to Australia immediately.
The 30-year-old NRL veteran, who played 232 games and had previously made 124 appearances for Manly Warringah, joined the Warriors at the start of the 2023 season.
His final match for the Warriors was a 14-6 win over the Roosters.
Walker's departure was unexpected, but the club respected his decision to leave.
Warriors CEO Cameron George stated, "Dylan has made a significant contribution to the club in his short time here and we are extremely disappointed to see him go, but we understand and respect his desire to return to Australia for personal reasons."
Although Walker's time with the Warriors was brief, he made a positive impact both on and off the field.
Coach Adam Blair acknowledged his efforts, saying, "Dylan has been a great asset to the team since his arrival.
He brought experience and leadership to the group, and his presence will be missed."
Walker expressed gratitude to the Warriors for their understanding and support during this difficult time.
In a statement, he said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to have played for such a fantastic club and I leave with many fond memories.
I appreciate the understanding and compassion shown to me by the Warriors and wish them all the best for the remainder of the season."
While Walker's departure may leave a void in the Warriors' squad, the team is committed to moving forward and continuing their season with a positive mindset.
As George mentioned, "We have full confidence in the players and staff to maintain their focus and continue working towards the goals for the season.
We wish Dylan all the best for the future and know he will be successful in whatever he chooses to do next."
This unexpected turn of events serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face both on and off the field, and the importance of supporting them in times of need.
Walker's early release highlights the human side of professional sports and the understanding and empathy required in such situations.
