Volkman gets a shoulder lift while contract saga unfolds

Uncontracted halfback Ronald Volkman is set to undergo shoulder surgery, with the New Zealand Warriors graciously covering the expenses.

Volkman found himself in a precarious situation, as he faced the daunting possibility of footing the bill while remaining without a contract for the 2024 season.

The saga that unfolded during the off-field debacle at the start of the year has led both the Warriors and the St George Illawarra Dragons to engage in a blame game.

However, thanks to new provisions in the collective bargaining agreement, Volkman can now breathe a sigh of relief.

News Corp has reported that the Warriors will honor their commitment to cover his surgery, a pivotal development under the revamped rules that almost halted negotiations a year ago.

These rules stipulate that in certain circumstances, a player's former club may still be liable for medical expenses.

Volkman's case falls under this category, as he secured a release from the Warriors to join the Dragons for a one-year deal after having two years remaining on his previous contract.
