Mark Nawaqanitawase joined the Australian Kangaroos' dressing-room celebrations after their victory over New Zealand, despite preparing to leave the NRL for Japan.
The former Sydney Roosters winger, 26, is due to join Japanese rugby union side Panasonic Saitama Wild Knights for at least two seasons.
Two weeks after his rugby league farewell, NRL executive chairman Peter V'landys approached him and said he hoped the move would not be permanent.
"Yes, I did tell him I want him back ... I don't want him leaving. I would do anything to have Mark back. I'm so surprised that the RA [Rugby Australia] has not rolled out the red carpet to get this once-in-a-generation player back in the Wallaby team."
Nawaqanitawase quickly became a dangerous attacking player at the Roosters after switching from rugby union, impressing with his aerial ability, athleticism and finishing.
His Japanese move does not guarantee a Wallabies return, while a possible international switch to Fiji has also been discussed.
On Instagram, he said his immediate priority was settling in with his new team and that he would decide his international future next year.
"I just thought I would jump on here as there has been a lot of speculation on my future," he wrote.
"My only focus right now is moving to Japan in a couple of weeks and connecting with my new team … I will weigh up my options and make a decision next year on my international future. Love Marky."
