A utility forward for the North Queensland Cowboys is reportedly facing an exit from the club, with his departure from the NRL potentially occurring sooner than expected. After a disappointing 2025 season that saw the Cowboys finish 12th and miss the finals, the team is planning significant roster changes as head coach Todd Payten aims to secure his position.

While much focus in Townsville is on Jaxon Purdue and the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Cowboys, it appears another player may also be leaving. Although utility forward Karl Lawton is under contract until the end of 2026, League Express has reported that he has been given the go-ahead to explore other opportunities. He is currently in discussions with several Super League clubs.

Lawton made 11 appearances for the Cowboys in his inaugural season with the team. His career includes previous tenures with the Manly Sea Eagles (2021-24), New Zealand Warriors (2018-20), and Gold Coast Titans (2016-17). At 29 years old, he is one of 15 players available on the open market and is free to engage with other teams. As he approaches the later stages of his career, Lawton has recorded a total of 115 appearances and 14 tries since making his debut in 2016 against the Warriors.
