Adam O'Brien's position as head coach of the Newcastle Knights is increasingly precarious, particularly following the cancellation of media engagements prior to the upcoming match against Cronulla.

Another board meeting is anticipated, potentially taking place as soon as Thursday.

Although O'Brien is under contract until the end of 2027, the probability of an early departure appears to be rising, especially as the team fights to avoid finishing at the bottom of the league.

There is also the possibility that O'Brien may opt to resign voluntarily and negotiate a settlement with the club's leadership.

While cameras were permitted during Newcastle's training session on Wednesday morning, opportunities for interviews with players Thomas Cant and Phoenix Crossland were canceled.

Additionally, O'Brien's scheduled pre-match interview at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday morning has been called off.

Conducting player interviews would have been a challenging task in the absence of any formal announcement regarding O'Brien's future with the club.
