Reports regarding the future of young Newcastle Knights outside back, Wilson De Courcey, have been mixed, especially as he has yet to play in first-grade.
De Courcey began his career in the Penrith Panthers system before transferring to Newcastle at the start of the 2024 Under-19s SG Ball Cup season. This move led to him securing a maiden NRL contract for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
According to reports from The Newcastle Herald this week, De Courcey has been released from the remainder of his contract. This decision appears to open up a space on the club's Top 30 roster that could be utilized to bring Sandon Smith from the Sydney Roosters.
At just 20 years old, the Knights are optimistic about De Courcey's potential and hope for a standout performance over the next 12 months, particularly as veteran Dane Gagai approaches the end of his playing career.
In this year's campaign, De Courcey showcased impressive stats, scoring 19 tries in 18 NSW Cup matches. He also achieved 38 tackle busts, 14 line-breaks, and accumulated 1877 running metres, averaging 104 metres per game, along with providing three try assists.
