This Sunday marks a crucial clash as the second-to-last team faces off against the bottom team on the NRL ladder.

As it stands, the Gold Coast Titans occupy the last position, while St George Illawarra sits just above them, thanks to a slightly better points differential.

Both teams have yet to secure a victory this season.

Last week, St George seemed to have a handle on their match against Parramatta, only to falter with a series of poor discipline, decisions, and tactics.

Despite this, they showcased impressive performance against the Bulldogs in Las Vegas and went neck-and-neck with the Melbourne Storm for sixty minutes during their Round 2 encounter.

The Titans, known for their inconsistency, faced a tough defeat by the Sharks in Round 1. They also gave the Dolphins a solid scare at Suncorp Stadium, while managing to keep pace with the Cowboys for portions of last week's game in Townsville.

This latest loss has certainly raised concerns for Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay. Initially, it was his counterpart, Todd Payten, who faced the heat. Now, Payten can rest easier, while Hannay finds himself burning the midnight oil trying to address his team's defensive issues and their challenges in maintaining focus during matches.

This is a recurring theme for the Titans over the years, as new coaches, including Hannay, have tried to instill a sense of consistency in the squad.

A respected figure in coaching, Justin Holbrook led the Titans to their last finals appearance in 2021.
