Toovey's Origin chances shouldn't be overlooked, amid Gould's criticism

OPINION:

In the world of Rugby League, there's been a fair bit of chinwagging about who will step into the big shoes left behind by Michael Maguire as the next coach of the NSW State of Origin team.

And let me tell you, if Geoff Toovey isn't in the mix, then someone must have dropped the ball!

Toovey, a tough as nails former player who led the Manly Sea Eagles to glory as captain and bled sky blue in 16 State of Origin clashes, surely deserves a fair crack at the gig.

He's got the runs on the board, mate.

With his never-say-die attitude and a knack for getting the best out of his players, Toovey proved himself as a coach with a win rate that's nothing to sneeze at - 58% across 105 NRL games, not to mention a trip to the big dance in 2013 and a few top eight finishes.

Crikey, that's nothing to sniff at.

So, when old mate Gus Gould says Toovey ain't the man for the job, he's off his rocker.

Toovey's got the passion, the smarts, and the know-how to take the Blues back to the promised land.

So, let's not drop the ball on this one, NSW - give Tooves a fair go!
