The Gold Coast Titans have discovered their next big star in Arama Hau, who delivered a fantastic performance in a 22-14 victory against St George Illawarra.
New head coach Josh Hannay celebrated his inaugural win of the season thanks to Hau, who scored two remarkable tries, including a breathtaking 50-meter run in the 74th minute to give the Titans the lead for the first time.
Meanwhile, the struggling Dragons continue to face challenges, having now tied their worst losing streak in history with eight consecutive losses dating back to last season, matching their 2021 slump.
To add to their troubles, Dragons five-eighth Kyle Flanagan suffered a concerning injury after colliding with teammate Hayden Buchanan during a tackle attempt in the 61st minute involving Gold Coast debutant hooker Oliver Pascoe.
Flanagan remained motionless on the ground for several minutes but was seen moving his arms as he was transported on a medicab off the field.
He was taken to the hospital in an ambulance while wearing a neck brace right after the match concluded.
Both teams struggled offensively, showcasing performances that indicate they might be contenders for the wooden spoon this season.
The Dragons welcomed back Tyrell Sloan, who scored 17 tries last year, and he made an immediate impact by scoring a try early in the game after a slick pass from center Valentine Holmes.
In response, Titans winger Phil Sami, who is set to transfer to St George Illawarra on a three-year deal starting in 2027, showcased his skills with a stunning 90-meter intercept try, thwarting what seemed like a guaranteed score for the visitors.
