Incoming Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay is making significant changes ahead of the new NRL season, as he has reportedly informed several former Origin players that they are free to seek opportunities with other clubs. Recently named as the successor to Gold Coast coach Des Hasler for 2026, Hannay faces a daunting task at the struggling Titans.

Hannay has been awarded a three-year contract with the Titans, and one of his top priorities is to persuade Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, the Maroons star and Gold Coast captain, to remain at the club. Tino's hefty 10-year, $12 million deal includes an exit clause for 2027. He has publicly stated his intention to test the market starting November 1, with interest from Mal Meninga and the Perth Bears.

The new Titans head coach is eager to retain Tino, viewing him as essential to the club's future. In the coming weeks, Hannay plans to engage in crucial discussions with the skipper, alongside former Origin standout David Fifita, who has drawn attention from Wayne Bennett's South Sydney for 2026.

Hannay appears to be preparing for Fifita's potential exit and is reportedly poised to approve moves for three additional Titans players, including other former Origin participants. According to Nine league reporter Michael Chammas, the Titans have granted former Blues prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard, former Maroons flyer Phillip Sami, and seasoned outside back Brian Kelly permission to explore options with rival teams.

Chammas commented, "We already know that David Fifita has been given permission to look around. It's my mail that Phillip Sami, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, and Brian Kelly have been told they're not part of the plans. If they can find something else going forward, then they are more than happy for them to look around."

This news has split Titans fans, with many particularly surprised by the decision to permit Sami to leave. The versatile back has been one of the few bright spots for the Titans this season, amassing 15 tries in 21 games while playing both wing and center.

Sami played two games for the Maroons during the end-of-season 2020 Origin series amid the Covid pandemic but has not represented Queensland since. However, the 28-year-old has excelled at the Titans, earning a reputation as a fan favorite due to his tough defense, powerful runs, and ability to find the try line.
