Former Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis has expressed his regret over his time in the role, revealing he wishes he "regrets taking on the role" during an interview on Mornings with Vossy and Brandy on SEN.
He stated that more change is essential for the club to "adapt to a new reality." Hagipantelis, who was removed from his position alongside the Tigers board at the end of 2023, acknowledged that the club faced significant challenges during his tenure, including frequent coaching changes, disappointing results, and internal divisions.
Reflecting on his experience, Hagipantelis characterized the situation as tumultuous, noting that the "Tales from Tiger Town" documentary had devolved into a "Michael Maguire biopic." He candidly shared his feelings about his time in leadership: "I was asked a little while ago whether I missed being chairman of the Wests Tigers.
My response was 'not only do I not miss being chairman, I regret taking on the role'.
In retrospect, I think it was a mistake (because) there is no upside to the role.
It's an honorary role and you have no real authority or power to effect any change."
His comments underline a sense of frustration with the lack of control and effectiveness experienced during his chairmanship, indicating a desire for the club to reevaluate its direction moving forward.
