Tiger Try: Rookie Tavana's Contortionist Try

Wests Tigers rookie Faaletino Tavana produced one of the season's most remarkable tries during a preseason trial against the Sydney Roosters.

The contest, largely featuring second-string combinations, saw the Tigers overturn a 0-16 deficit to secure a 42-26 victory on Saturday.

Heamasi Makasini stole headlines with a hat-trick, but it was Tavana's athletic finish that became the defining moment of the match.

In a display of body control and awareness Tavana leapt out of play to evade defender Enzo Griffier then twisted to touch the ball down close to the posts late in the contest.

Coach Benji Marshall left the field with reasons to be upbeat after watching a youngster deliver at crucial moments and a winger find rich scoring form.

Makasini's three-try haul will give the club confidence that the teenager is ready to step into a larger role in 2026.

The timing of that performance could not be better as the Tigers prepare to rejig their backline with Adam Doueihi starting the season in the halves.

Much of Makasini's preseason work has been spent on the left wing as he battles with Jeral Skelton for selection opportunities.

He also offers the versatility to slot in at centre if Starford To'a or Taylan May are sidelined while Doueihi fills a playmaking role.

"I can cover both spots. I like both positions," Makasini said.

"I've been on the left a bit, left wing. But there's a couple of good wingers in the team. We're all fighting for the spot."

The trial gave depth players a chance to press their claims and left the coaching staff with clear selection questions ahead of the regular season.
