Dylan Edwards eagerly anticipates playing alongside Spencer Leniu in the upcoming State of Origin opener, despite warnings that Leniu will be a target for Maroons players.

Leniu has become a focal point of attention after a recent altercation with Queensland legend Johnathan Thurston, who criticized Leniu's eight-week ban for racially taunting Ezra Mam last year.

This criticism sparked a tense exchange between Leniu and Thurston at Suncorp Stadium, igniting heightened emotions ahead of the match.

Former Maroons player Mat Rogers acknowledged that Leniu will face a hostile reception from the Queensland crowd but cautioned that antagonizing him may backfire.

"They'll give it to him, there's no question about that," Rogers commented on Fox Sports.

He suggested that the Maroons should consider targeting another player, as Leniu thrives on confrontation and might be motivated by the crowd's hostility, making him even more dangerous on the field.

Stephen Crichton, Edwards' Blues and former Panthers teammate, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Leniu "lives for those moments." Crichton noted that Leniu's aggressive style and ability to run hard can benefit the NSW team.

Edwards, who has also played alongside Leniu at Penrith, praised Leniu's impact on the team and expressed confidence in his ability to perform under pressure.

"He's an incredibly passionate and physical player, and I'm excited to link up with Spencer again," Edwards shared with Triple M.

He believes Leniu will stick to his role and not be distracted by the intense atmosphere, highlighting Leniu's competitive spirit: "I expect no difference up there." According to Edwards, Leniu's energy and commitment are crucial assets for the NSW team in the series.
