Former Newcastle Knights front-rower Tyrone Thompson has secured a new contract that marks both a club switch and his exit from the NRL.

Thompson, who is the twin brother of Canterbury Bulldogs player Leo Thompson, will be rejoining the rugby union scene, having signed with the Super Rugby franchise, the Chiefs, following a single season with the Knights.

Making his debut in Round 6 against the Wests Tigers, the 25-year-old participated in only three games for the Newcastle side, spending most of his time in the NSW Cup reserve-grade competition.

Originally hailing from Gisborne but raised in Hawke's Bay, Thompson has previously represented the Maori All Blacks and All Blacks XV in rugby union and aims to achieve similar international recognition on his return.
