Being tasked with filling the boots of Dom Young in Newcastle is no small feat, and Tom Jenkins understands the challenge ahead.
As reported by news.com.au, the new recruit admits that he felt like "a little kid going to school" when he first started pre-season training with the Knights.
However, he knows he must quickly prove himself as there is no shortage of competition for the vacant spot on the right wing.
Young, the try-scoring machine, impressed with 25 tries in 25 games for Newcastle last season.
While Jenkins' strike rate may be identical, it is important to note that it comes from a smaller sample size due to his time with the Panthers.
Jenkins, who showcased his skills by scoring five tries in five NRL games this year, has been a dominating force in reserve grade.
He has watched the more established stars win three titles in three years, making it clear why he sought out a new opportunity in Newcastle.
However, earning the wing spot is far from guaranteed for the 22-year-old.
Enari Tuala and Krystian Mapapalangi are also strong contenders, alongside Greg Marzhew, to secure a place on the flanks.
Jenkins acknowledges the fierce competition, stating, "(The wing spot) is definitely a carrot, but there's so much competition here." He appreciates the high level of competitiveness and understands that he will have to earn his place on the team.
With potential teammates like Enari and 'Maps,' Jenkins embraces the challenge and welcomes the healthy competition that awaits him.
