Tex Hoy, the former Newcastle Knights fullback and five-eighth, is back in Australia following his time in the English Super League and is now pursuing a return to the NRL with the Manly Sea Eagles.
According to the Newcastle Herald, the 26-year-old versatile player has signed a train and trial contract with Manly. This opportunity will allow Hoy to contend for either a development or Top 30 roster spot at the club. He previously showcased his talent during his 29-game tenure with the Knights before moving to England.
In the Super League, Hoy played 24 matches for Hull FC in 2023 and 2024, before transferring mid-season to the Castleford Tigers, where he has since played an additional 35 games, extending his contract until the end of 2025.
Known for his agility and footwork, Hoy has the potential to impress coach Anthony Seibold. However, any chance of securing a signing would likely see him start in the NSW Cup, especially with Luke Brooks positioned as the club's five-eighth. Additionally, either Lehi Hopoate or Tom Trbojevic will already occupy the fullback spot.
Being a Newcastle native, Hoy is also receiving interest from the local competitive scene, which could be appealing to him. While his primary goal is to secure an NRL future, reports indicate that the South Newcastle Lions, his former club, are making inquiries about his availability.
If Hoy joins the Lions, he would have the added familiarity of playing alongside another ex-Knight, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, who is also returning from the Super League this year. Fitzgibbon has expressed that Hoy still has a lot to offer at the NRL level.
