NSW has dropped a bombshell ahead of the State of Origin series opener, with James Tedesco being called up to the Blues team.

The former captain was initially left out by new coach Michael Maguire, but a last-minute injury to Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards has seen Tedesco brought back into the fold.

It's a tough break for Edwards, who was on the cusp of making his Origin debut before the injury setback.

Rumors started swirling on Saturday about Edwards' fitness, with Tedesco being put on standby in case the worst happened.

Unfortunately for Edwards, scans confirmed the injury and he has been ruled out of the opener at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

In true rugby league fashion, it's a rollercoaster ride for both players as Tedesco gets a second chance to prove himself on the big stage.

With all eyes on the Blues, the pressure is on for Tedesco to deliver a standout performance and help NSW kick off the series on the right foot.

Time will tell if this last-minute change will work in NSW's favor or if it will be a missed opportunity for Edwards.
