Siosifa Talakai has indicated his time at Cronulla will likely end after 2026 as the Perth Bears close in on securing his services.
The versatile forward, who can play second-row, centre or in the middle third of the field, brings State of Origin experience and considerable power.
Perth's expansion list already features 13 signings locked in for their inaugural 2027 season.
That nucleus includes Nick Meaney, Tyran Wishart, Toby Sexton, Josh Curran and Liam Henry.
Adding Talakai would stand out as one of the more impactful recruitments for the new franchise.
Talakai said he hoped to have made a decision by the end of the week.
"It's something my partner and I have been talking about, and we know it's a great opportunity - why wouldn't you want to go over there and be a founding member as well," Talakai told the publication.
"It's going to be hard to get a deal done here at Cronulla. If I had the opportunity to stay, I would, but it's not about me any more. It's about what's best for me, my partner and my family.
"I don't want to stand in the way of any players coming through. I'm definitely entertaining the Perth deal."
Sources suggest Perth coach Mal Meninga would deploy him primarily as a middle forward if the move proceeds.
Cronulla already possess several forwards across the middle and edges, which complicates retention plans.
Additionally, salary cap pressures are likely to result in William Kennedy leaving the Sharks at season's end.
Ultimately Talakai appears to be weighing professional opportunity against family priorities as he considers the next step.
