Mark Nawaqanitawase missed only one tackle across four finals appearances, a turnaround that impressed Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson.
He also ran 237 metres from 26 carries in the 19-18 grand final victory over Newcastle, scoring twice.
The 26-year-old finished his Roosters stint with 47 tries in 47 games before returning to rugby in Japan.
Robinson said Nawaqanitawase had made a rare impact on the NRL, after earlier exploits for the Wallabies and Australia's rugby sevens side.
"There have been some amazing wingers that have. What Brett Morris did for us in 2019 was a memorable performance," Robinson said.
"Mark has done things from the wing in touching the ball in so many different types and styles, I hope he has created another generation of those types of players."
In the final, Nawaqanitawase kicked with both feet and regathered to score before halftime, then finished in the corner after a left-foot step.
"It's extraordinary watching him play the game," Robinson said.
Robinson recalled that tackling had once been a weakness, but praised the winger's growth, freedom and care. He said he would not be surprised to see Nawaqanitawase return one day.
"I feel like he has made a big difference to us and we have made a big difference in him."
