Sweaty Conditions Lead to Unexpected NRL Losses

Defeat cut deep for Broncos prop Payne Haas on Friday night.

Queensland's weather can be stunning one day and a challenge the next, especially in the NRL.

Is it possible this round was the most sweat-inducing in NRL history?

If Prince Andrew played rugby league, even he would have dripped with sweat. The early March heat turned warm-up sessions into intense sauna experiences. By the end of games, players were hitting the ground with cramps as if they'd been shot. Each stadium felt like it was located in Queensland.

Curiously, even though the Queensland teams are accustomed to humid conditions, they all ended up losing. On Sunday, as the air felt more like a sponge than precipitation, South Sydney slid past the Dolphins with a score of 40-30, leaving all the Queensland clubs at zero points after the first round.

Souths have some of the league's shorter players, and Jye Gray, Peter Mamouzelos, and Bud Sullivan demonstrated that a small bar of soap is trickier to grip than a larger one. The key try came from Lachlan Hubner, who, echoing James Graham's infamous Vaso-gate incident in 2012, evaded tackles as if coated in oil.
