Australia's Kangaroos coach, Mal Meninga, has received another setback as it is reported that Latrell Mitchell may have to withdraw from the end-of-season Tests squad due to a hand injury that may require surgery.

Mitchell had been playing through the pain since sustaining the injury in the NRL round 22 victory over the Wests Tigers.

Daily Telegraph reporter Phil Rothfield revealed that Mitchell is expected to inform Meninga of his decision on Tuesday, as he is eager to resolve the issue promptly and avoid further injury.

On 100% Footy, Nine's Michael Chammas provided further details on Mitchell's injury, stating that if surgery is not required, he will still need to rest the hand to avoid a potential amputation, similar to Angus Crichton's finger injury a few years ago.

Mitchell's 2023 season has been plagued by injuries, with a calf injury ruling him out of the State of Origin series and causing him to miss a significant portion of South Sydney's season.

Despite his return, the Rabbitohs failed to make the finals despite leading the competition until round 12.
