Toulouse Olympique XIII and York RLFC have been selected by an independent panel to join the Super League for the 2026 season, expanding the league to 14 teams. The London Broncos, however, will not participate despite their recent takeover.
According to skysports.com, the decision to expand the Super League to 14 teams was based on a vote by the clubs, utilizing the existing gradings system for the first 12 teams.
Rather than applying the gradings for all teams, an independent panel was formed to select the additional two clubs. This panel, chaired by RFL board member Lord Jonathan Caine, ultimately determined that Toulouse and York, who finished 13th and 14th in the grading system, should fill the remaining places in the top flight. Nine clubs submitted applications for consideration.
As a result of this decision, Toulouse and York's promotion to the Super League means that the London Broncos miss out, despite a recent consortium takeover led by NRL legend Darren Lockyer.
The Broncos have also made significant signings, including NRL star Reagan Campbell-Gillard, and have Jason Demetriou on board as head coach.
