The Super League is set to increase its team count from 12 to 14 starting next season in 2026.

This decision comes after a vote among the current clubs.

A statement from the league outlined that the expansion will involve a combination of a club grading system and recommendations from an independent panel.

The panel will be led by Lord Jonathan Caine, who has recently joined the RFL's board and also serves on the strategic review sub-committee.

At the conclusion of the 2025 season, the top 12 clubs based on the grading system will be joined by two additional clubs recommended by the panel.

These recommendations will only proceed if "there are two applications of sufficient merit against the set criteria."

This adjustment marks the first time since 2014 that the Super League will operate with 14 teams, as it previously reduced its team count to 12 for the 2015 season.
