Melbourne Storm's NRL finals hopes have been dealt a blow with the news that halfback Jahrome Hughes will be unable to play in the do-or-die clash against the Roosters.

Hughes, who has been struggling with a calf injury, was unable to overcome the issue in time for the match.

This adds to the Storm's injury woes, as they are already missing key players Ryan Papenhuyzen, Xavier Coates, and Young Tonumaipea for the game.

Coach Craig Bellamy confirmed that Tyran Wishart will replace Hughes at halfback, although other options such as Harry Grant and Nick Meaney could also step in.

Despite the potential replacements, Bellamy expressed confidence in Wishart's abilities.

However, concerns have been raised about the nature of Hughes' injury, with comparisons drawn to Shaun Johnson's recent absence from the Warriors' finals clash due to a similar issue.

This raises questions about Hughes' availability for future matches, even if the Storm are able to overcome the Roosters.
