In a surprising turn of events, the Melbourne Storm have decided to part ways with experienced centre Reimis Smith, effective immediately.
As the Storm push towards the finals, Smith has not been in action since Round 14, despite featuring in 12 games earlier in the season.
The 27-year-old, who was set to be out of contract at the end of the year, had hoped to secure a new deal with the club.
However, it seems that won't be happening as the Storm have granted Smith a release to pursue an opportunity overseas.
"We wish Reimis all the best in his future endeavors and we thank him and his partner Bronti for their incredible contributions to the club.
We wish them nothing but success in their next chapter," said Melbourne Storm director of football Frank Ponissi in a statement.
Earlier this year, Smith expressed his desire to stay with the Storm for the long haul.
However, it seems that circumstances have led to this sudden change in plans.
Good luck to Smith as he embarks on his next sporting adventure.
