Melbourne Storm is leading the way in breaking barriers for female talent in rugby league, with the support of the Australian Government.

The Breaking Barriers program, part of the Play the Way initiative, aims to increase the number of female coaches and referees in Victoria and prepare players for future competitions.

Storm CEO Justin Rodski expressed gratitude for the government support, noting the success of the Club's female development program introduced in 2024.

"The Australian Government's support will build on the success of the female development program," Rodski stated.

Captain Harry Grant and young players and referees Mahlia Davys, Pearl Potesio, Taylor Marama, and Deandrea Morgan were present at the official launch of the program at AAMI Park.

Minister for Sport Anika Wells commended Melbourne Storm for their efforts in promoting gender equality in rugby league.

"Female representation in coaching and refereeing is something the government is passionate about and it's great to see Melbourne Storm leading the way in this space," Wells mentioned.

The Breaking Barriers program not only aims to create opportunities for women and girls in rugby league but also prepares them for the Club's upcoming participation in the Lisa Fiaola U17 and Tarsha Gale U19 NSW Rugby League competitions.

The initiative is a step towards achieving greater gender diversity within the sport and providing a pathway for talented female players, coaches, and referees to excel in the game.

Overall, Melbourne Storm's Breaking Barriers program is a significant step towards promoting gender equality and creating more opportunities for female talent in rugby league.

With the support of the Australian Government and the dedication of the Club, more women and girls in Victoria will have the chance to play, coach, and referee at a higher level in the sport.
