The Melbourne Storm have announced the extension of Waka Hammond's contract, recognizing him as a standout talent within the club's pathways system.

Hammond was honored with the Young Tonumaipea Award as the Under-17s Harold Matthews Cup Player of the Year for 2024 and is seen as a vital component of the Storm's future, alongside teammates Cooper Clarke and Jai Bowden.

Versatile in his play, Hammond can fill roles as a fullback or in the halves. His exceptional abilities are highlighted by his quick footwork and effective right-foot step.

Originally under contract until the conclusion of the 2026 season, Hammond has signed a 12-month extension, securing his position at the club until at least the end of the 2027 NRL season. This contract prevents other teams from engaging with him starting November 1.

Recently, Hammond led Hallam Secondary College to victory in the Storm Cup. He remains eligible to compete in the SG Ball Cup for another two years and has already appeared in nine matches for the Under-21s Jersey Flegg Cup.

"It shows clearly now to all the young kids in Victoria there is a clear pathway with Waka being in high school and playing at under-21 level," commented Hallam school coach Janan Billings to the Herald Sun in 2024.
