Storm Denies Howarth Early Release Request

The ongoing rivalry between the Eels and Storm has taken another twist following a recent decision by Melbourne Storm regarding player Jack Howarth.

Melbourne has officially notified Howarth that it will not permit an early exit from the last year of his contract, thus quelling rumors about a potential transfer to the Parramatta Eels for 2027.

He will continue with the Storm throughout the next season, as his current contract runs through the end of 2027, despite interest from Parramatta.

According to a report from The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, the Storm opted to deny any early release requests, keeping the 23-year-old in their ranks for an additional year.

Howarth had been a prime candidate for reuniting with Parramatta coach Jason Ryles, who had previously coached the young outside back as an assistant at Melbourne.

This decision follows a rocky chapter between the Storm and Eels, marked by significant player movements that made headlines earlier in the year.

Melbourne was briefly considered a destination for Zac Lomax after the Rugby 360 situation, yet contractual issues led to a legal dispute between the clubs.

During this turmoil, a proposed player swap involving Lomax and Howarth was discussed, but it ultimately did not happen, and Lomax moved to rugby union instead.

Keeping Howarth adds crucial stability to the Storm's outside backs, especially as major roster changes loom for the next season.

At season's end, the Storm will bid farewell to utility Tyran Wishart, along with outside backs Nick Meaney and Will Warbrick.

However, they are expected to strengthen their backline with the introductions of Bronson Xerri and Jamayne Isaako.

Even though Howarth's immediate future is secure, the long-term picture remains uncertain.
