The Illawarra Steelers faced off against the Newcastle Knights in the Harold Matthews Cup Qualifying Final, ultimately coming up short with a 28-12 loss.

Despite a strong effort from co-captain Creighton Meafou, who scored a double for the Steelers, the team struggled to overcome errors and penalties that hindered their performance.

The Steelers showed promise with the ball but were unable to capitalize on opportunities to score points.

A missed opportunity occurred when they had numbers on Newcastle's left edge but failed to connect on the final pass.

Additionally, Sonny MacGregor was held up in a similar situation as the Steelers continued to push for their first points.

Newcastle extended their lead with a penalty goal from Chase Butler, putting them up by more than two converted tries.

The Steelers fought hard but ultimately fell short against the Knights in a challenging match.
