St George Dragons eye Burton amid uncertainty

Clinton Gutherson, Valentine Holmes and Moses Suli are due off contract after 2027, potentially opening space for St George Illawarra to strengthen its outside backs.

Phil Rothfield reported on Triple M that the Dragons are strongly interested in Matt Burton for 2028.

Burton and Canterbury reportedly have not agreed on a new deal, and the Dubbo native is expected to consider his options, attracting rival-club interest.

Nikorima is in career-best form, while the Dragons have also signed promising Luke Metcalf for 2027; youngster Kade Reed adds depth in the halves.

With those positions crowded, centre may be Burton's likelier role, although the Dragons' plan remains unclear.

Canterbury moved Burton to centre midway through 2026 and ended the season with Stephen Crichton and Lachlan Galvin in the halves.

The switch curtailed Burton's powerful kicking game, which has attracted attention from NFL scouts worldwide.
