Ashton Ward is due back next season after a high-grade hamstring injury in Round 24 ended his 2026 campaign, but South Sydney's halves plans remain uncertain.
The Rabbitohs have yet to re-sign Latrell Mitchell, who can enter the open market on November 1. Injuries have limited him to 34 games over three seasons.
Cody Walker's expected one-year extension is also in doubt. On Fanatics TV, James Hooper and guest Buzz Rothfield reported South Sydney offered him $300,000 to play in 2027.
Jamie Humphreys could be an option at five-eighth if Walker departs. He is reportedly close to extending after a potential move to the Perth Bears fell through.
Humphreys competed with Ward for the halfback spot, but injuries disrupted his role. His ability to play lock, hooker and back row adds value, though it remains unclear whether Wayne Bennett sees him as a long-term replacement.
Humphreys is the club's only halfback off-contract heading into 2027; others become available after that season. Ethan Sanders and unsigned youngster Jonah Glover are also possible halves options.
Mitchell's decision could shape South Sydney's recruitment. If he leaves, the club would have more room financially to pursue a marquee signing.
