South Sydney will not rush discussions with Latrell Mitchell, with negotiations on a contract extension expected to begin in March, when the 2027 season starts.
The decision means Mitchell can listen to rival clubs from November 1 regarding deals covering the 2028 season and beyond.
Souths chief executive Blake Solly confirmed the club is comfortable postponing negotiations until the pre-season has finished.
That timing does not reflect any dispute between Mitchell and the club. Relations at Heffron Park are understood to be stronger than ever, with the star known as "Trell Mit" appearing particularly positive.
He looked and sounded happy when speaking to reporters several weeks ago, before South Sydney's elimination final against Newcastle.
