Cameron Smith, the renowned NRL legend, has expressed openness to taking on an assistant coach role for the Australian national rugby league team after losing the head coach position to Kevin Walters.
The Australian team is set to appoint a new coach to lead them against England in a three-match Ashes series, the first since 2003, with the first Test taking place at Wembley Stadium on October 25.
Reports indicate that "Walters is to be confirmed for the role," having secured it over Smith, who is a celebrated figure from the Melbourne Storm and Queensland teams.
Although Brad Fittler was considered a frontrunner for the position, he withdrew due to his media commitments with Channel Nine.
During an appearance on 100% Footy, Smith shared that he received a call from NRL chairman Peter V'Landys informing him of the decision.
"I think Kev will do a great job, I was lucky enough to be coached by Kev...I think he will do a really good job," Smith remarked.
He added, "I had a phone call from Peter V'Landys a couple of days ago.
There was no formal discussion around me being the coach.
There was no interview...he gave me a phone call just to let me know that the decision was made they are going to go with Kev.
I am happy with that decision, I respect that decision.
If I had a chance to put my case forward, I would have...I think it's a great appointment."
Despite being recognized as a strategic mind in the NRL, Smith's lack of head coaching experience likely hindered his chances for the top role.
He had previously served as an assistant to Billy Slater with the Queensland State of Origin team, which, along with his extensive knowledge and experience as captain of the Kangaroos, made him a strong candidate.
In his conversation with V'Landys, Smith noted that the possibility of an assistant role had been discussed.
"Well that was mentioned in the phone call.
That could be possibly something to look at...but I haven't had any further discussions with Peter, with Andrew Abdo or anyone in the NRL about that," Smith stated.
As the team prepares for the upcoming series, Smith's involvement as an assistant coach could add significant value, given his leadership experience and deep understanding of the game.
