Smith leaves Hull FC after poor start to season

Tony Smith has bid adieu to Hull FC after a sluggish start to the season, leaving the club in search of new leadership to turn their fortunes around.

The departure comes after mutual agreement between the coach and the club, with Smith expressing disappointment at not being able to see the challenging project through.

Joining the club back in September 2022, Smith's 18-month tenure saw the team languishing second-bottom in the Super League standings.

The Australian, with previous experience managing their city rivals Hull KR, steered Hull FC to a 10th-placed finish last season.

However, the 2024 campaign has been marred by a string of losses, with the team only securing victory in one out of their seven games.

Assistant coach Stanley Gene also bids farewell as the club looks to shake things up in a bid for a turnaround.

"I want to wish the club and all of the players well for the future," remarked Smith in a statement released by the club.

As the dust settles on Smith's departure, Hull FC will be on the hunt for a new leader to guide them through the rough seas of the Super League, hoping to reclaim their former glory and rise in the ranks once more.
