Tyrell Sloan is reportedly on the verge of leaving the St George Illawarra Dragons after being granted permission to seek an immediate release.

This move may facilitate the signing of Selwyn Cobbo, as the Dragons are keen on acquiring him before the June 30 deadline.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the Dragons are open to letting Sloan exit before his $500,000 deal expires at the end of 2026.

The Melbourne Storm has emerged as a potential new home for Sloan, who has been considered surplus to requirements under coach Shane Flanagan.

The urgency surrounding Cobbo's situation has intensified, particularly as he has been demoted to reserve grade following recent extensions for others at the Brisbane Broncos.

With the Broncos only able to offer Cobbo a contract of around $300,000 to remain, critics have labeled this offer as "insulting," particularly given his current salary of $650,000 per year.

Cobbo reportedly met with Dragons officials in Wollongong last week during a Broncos bye week.

The Dragons are seen as the favorites to sign the 23-year-old, with plans for him to potentially replace Clint Gutherson at fullback in the long term.

Flanagan's decision to allow Sloan to depart stems from growing impatience with his inconsistent performances, which led to a drop to reserve grade this season.

Former NRL premiership winners Bryan Fletcher and Matty Johns discussed the future of both players on SEN radio, agreeing that Melbourne would be the ideal club for Sloan.

This situation demonstrates the shifting dynamics of player contracts and the strategies teams employ as deadlines approach.
