Slater's Surprising Picks: Prop-tastic Decisions Unveiled

LeagueNews.co | Jason Patrick

Queensland Maroons head coach Billy Slater has made significant selection calls ahead of the Game 3 decider in Sydney.

Notably, he confirmed the return of prop Josh Papalii and the call-up of Gehamat Shibasaki, citing his impressive performances for the Brisbane Broncos.

This decision raised eyebrows when first reported on Sunday evening, but Slater reaffirmed it on Monday morning.

Shibasaki's inclusion necessitates a shift in positions, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow moving to fullback to replace the injured Kalyn Ponga.

Meanwhile, Reece Walsh, who has recently recovered from an injury, will take on the 18th man role.

Reflecting on Shibasaki's journey, Slater noted that he had earned his spot despite initially starting the season on a train and trial deal with the Broncos.

His performances have caught the attention of new coach Michael Maguire, leading to a contract upgrade.

"I've always spoken about this footy team and the individuals in this footy team giving the people inspiration and inspiring the state.

Gehamat's story is an inspiration," Slater stated.

With these strategic changes, Slater aims to instill confidence and motivation within the team as they prepare for the crucial match.
