Queensland coach Billy Slater has made an unexpected prediction regarding Roosters winger Mark Nawaqanitawase, suggesting he could don the green and gold jersey by year-end. Nawaqanitawase has continually impressed fans with outstanding skills during the 2025 season, following his transition from rugby union.

In the recent match against Parramatta, he showcased his talent with a remarkable behind-the-back flick pass to Robert Toia, resulting in a try. This season, the Roosters player has primarily occupied the right wing but has also stepped in at center when needed.

With 16 tries and seven assists under his belt, Nawaqanitawase has become a player to watch as the season progresses. Slater expressed his admiration for Nawaqanitawase's performance, highlighting his unique abilities.

"He's done some special things. He's a wonderful player. I think he's fantastic, I love the way he plays. He's got great strengths, he's good under the high ball and he's a big, powerful sort of get out of trouble player as well," Slater stated on the Billy Slater Podcast, referring to the flick pass as perhaps the best he's witnessed.

He further added, "When they get it right the Roosters, they unlock all this talent in this footy team and he's certainly one. When he gets the ball, he can do some freakish things."

Slater's enthusiasm for Nawaqanitawase's development has led him to believe that the 23-year-old could be included in the Kangaroos lineup for the upcoming Ashes series. Kevin Walters is still in the process of finalizing his 22-man squad for the Ashes tour set to kick off after the season concludes.

Last year, former coach Mal Meninga opted to include in-form players Zac Lomax and Xavier Coates on the wings for the Pacific Championship final against Tonga, and both made notable contributions. Coates, in particular, has elevated his performance for both the Maroons and Melbourne Storm in recent weeks as the 2025 season progresses.
