Slater's Last Call: Will Fermor Change the Game?

Queensland legend calls for Billy Slater to make last-minute team change for State of Origin 1

Queensland rugby league icon Brent Tate has urged coach Billy Slater to consider a last-minute change in his lineup for the State of Origin 1 match on May 28.

Slater's team includes three debutants: Robert Toia, Beau Fermor, and Trent Loiero.

Reports indicate that Toia will start in the centers, while Fermor and Loiero will begin on the bench.

Tate advocates for Fermor to replace Reuben Cotter in the starting position.

Despite being named the Wally Lewis medallist as the player of the series in 2023, Cotter has not been as impactful recently, particularly during Queensland's 2-1 loss last year.

His performance with the Cowboys in 2025 raised questions about his selection for the Maroons, especially with injuries affecting the squad.

However, he has found himself starting in the second-row due to Tom Gilbert's injury.

Tate, who played 23 Origin games for Queensland, believes that Fermor deserves a starting spot.

"I have absolutely loved watching Beau Fermor," Tate commented on SEN radio, noting his impressive performance against the Cowboys in Townsville.

He adds, "I would like to see him start to be honest.

I'd then bring Reuben on (from the bench) to have an impact."

Tate argued that starting Fermor would be beneficial, stating, "Throw Beau in there because he's big enough and he's physical enough.

It would also be good for his head to start him as well." He expressed that while the change isn't certain, it makes sense in his view, emphasizing the potential benefits of starting Fermor over Cotter.
