Slater's Gamble: Will It Turn the Tide?

Andrew Johns calls out Billy Slater 'masterstroke' that could change State of Origin series

NRL legend Andrew Johns has praised Queensland coach Billy Slater for the decision to appoint Cameron Munster as captain, calling it a "masterstroke" that could influence the outcome of the State of Origin series.

This change comes after Queensland's disappointing performance in Game 1, where they suffered an 18-6 defeat against NSW, with Munster among those struggling in a weak Queensland spine.

In a significant shake-up for Game 2 in Perth, veteran Daly Cherry-Evans has been dropped for Tom Dearden, allowing Munster to take on a leadership role.

Despite Munster being touted as a key player after missing last year's series, he was unable to counter NSW's dominating presence in Game 1.

Johns insists that to turn the tide, Queensland needs a revised game plan suited to the faster Perth track.

Johns emphasizes the potential benefits of this captaincy change, stating, "I think it's a masterstroke.

He'll lift.

I think he has been playing within himself.

He just might need that little bit of a prod just to bring out the old Munster." He believes that more responsibility will elevate Munster's game, particularly with increased kicking duties alongside Dearden.

"The more responsibility, the more pressure, the better players like Munster go.

So it's a huge watch for NSW," Johns adds.

This strategic move could be crucial for Queensland as they look to avoid a clean sweep in the series, with all eyes on how Munster responds to the added pressure as he aims to deliver a standout performance.
