Slater's future: Maroons eyeing sweet coaching victory

Maroons boss makes call on Billy Slater's future as Origin winner tipped to take Des Hasler's job

Queensland Rugby League chief Ben Ikin has indicated that the Maroons are eager to extend Billy Slater's contract following his coaching success in securing the recent Origin series victory.

This extension aims to foster a potential Maroons dynasty and deter interest from NRL clubs, particularly regarding Slater's assistant, Josh Hannay, who is being considered to replace the struggling Titans coach Des Hasler.

Slater's tactical prowess and bold team selections earned acclaim as the Maroons recovered from a Game 1 defeat to win the final two matches on the road, securing the Origin shield.

Currently contracted until the end of next year, which marks his fifth series in charge, Slater has garnered increased trust from the QRL.

Ikin stated, "It won't be a negotiation that looks similar to what happens in NRL land.

I have great trust when we hand him the reins to take this team through a series and that trust has only increased every year he's had the job." He emphasized that Slater's future coaching decisions will ultimately depend on Slater's aspirations beyond next year.

Amid Slater's growing profile, reports suggest that Josh Hannay is the frontrunner to succeed Hasler, whose position at the Titans is precarious.

Hasler, contracted until 2026, faces significant pressure with a clause that allows the Titans to terminate his contract if the team fails to secure a top-eight finish.

The Titans, sitting at the bottom of the ladder with only four wins from 15 games, could see their finals hopes dashed this weekend if they lose to the Broncos.

Journalist Michael Caryannis labeled Hasler's tenure at the Titans as "an absolute disaster," highlighting the challenges he has faced since taking over from Justin Holbrook.

Despite being brought in under a lucrative deal to enhance the team's competitiveness and lead them to finals appearances, Hasler's time with the Titans has been marred by underwhelming performance and significant scrutiny.
