Slater Open to Coaching Beyond Contract

Billy Slater speaks to reporters at a Maroons State of Origin training session in 2026.

Billy Slater believes that the current State of Origin series won't mark the end of his tenure as Queensland coach, though he will continue in his role based on a handshake agreement.

Next week's Origin III at Lang Park gives Slater the opportunity to capture his fourth series title as Maroons coach.

Following the 2023 series, he finalized a three-year extension.

"I won't be signing another contract. This is not a contract job for me," Slater told reporters during a media session on the Sunshine Coast while the Maroons prepared for camp.

"I really enjoy helping this group of men go and inspire the people of Queensland.

"When that changes, my position will change. Or if someone in the QRL [Queensland Rugby League] decides there's someone better for the job, I'm all for that as well."

When questioned about whether his future as Maroons coach would indeed rely on a handshake, Slater responded for clarity.

"Yep, pretty much," he replied.

"It might surprise you, but that's how it is."
