In a development that has Queensland fans frothing at the mouth, Maroons coach Billy Slater has revealed plans to shuffle rising star Reece Walsh to the wing to make way for the return of Kalyn Ponga at fullback.
The potential pairing of Ponga and Walsh in the upcoming State of Origin series has tongues wagging amongst Rugby League aficionados.
Ponga, fresh off a Dally M win, has been making waves on the field for the Knights, while Walsh, despite a facial injury setback, showed his mettle in a recent Broncos victory.
With the countdown to State of Origin Game I at a mere 50 days, Slater is tinkering with the lineup to fit both dynamic playmakers into the squad.
Last year, Walsh seized the fullback position in Ponga's absence and impressed with his performances for the Maroons.
Slater, known for his innovative approach to the game, sees the possibility of utilizing Walsh's versatility by moving him to the wing.
This strategic move echoes Slater's own positional switch early in his Origin career.
"I'm up for trying out different strategies.
Adapting and thinking outside the box is key," Slater shared with AAP.
"It's all about what best serves the team.
I'm sure they'd make a formidable duo out on the field someday."
