In a thrilling local derby at PointsBet Stadium, the Cronulla Sharks emerged victorious over the St George Illawarra Dragons with a close 16-8 win.

The Dragons, who were in desperate need of a win to stay in touch with the NRLW top-four, were dealt a blow as both teams now find themselves stranded on six points.

With only one round left, their chances of making it to the finals are hanging by a thread.

The Sharks, however, managed to turn the tide in their favor with two crucial tries in the final 13 minutes of the game.

Led by captain Tiana Penitani, who put in an exceptional performance, they were able to extend their lead and secure the win.

Emma Tonegato, recently crowned NSW Origin Player of the Year, also played a pivotal role in their victory, making a break up the middle and setting up winger Cassie Staples for a try.

Unfortunately for the Dragons, their night got off to a rough start when forward Sophie Clancy injured herself during warm-up and had to be replaced by 18th player Macie Carlile.

The outcome of the game has put a significant dent in the Dragons' hopes of reaching the finals in 2023, as both teams now face the possibility of missing out on the opportunity to play finals football.
