The Cronulla Sharks, who have not made any roster additions for 2026, are finally making their first signing in over a year by bringing in English international forward Owen Trout for 2027.
At 26 years old, Trout will become the first English player in the Sharks' history for more than fifty years.
"Owen's style of play is well suited for success in the NRL and we believe he is at the right stage of his career to make the move," said Sharks general manager of football Darren Mooney regarding the new acquisition.
"He still has a job to do at Leigh, and the focus is firmly on the current NRL season, but we look forward to welcoming him to the club in due course."
Having played 124 games in the Super League, the Leigh Leopards forward previously had stints with the Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants.
As the Sharks prepare for 2027, numerous signings are expected as they aim to refresh their squad.
With their salary cap at a critical point, the club could potentially part ways with several players, including Sione Katoa, Jesse Ramien, and Cameron McInnes, which would open the door for new additions.
Furthermore, concerns regarding the speed of the current squad suggest that a more extensive overhaul may be needed, especially with multiple players due to be off-contract by the end of 2026.
Trout offers valuable versatility, capable of playing both in the middle and on the edge, and made his international debut during the 2025 Ashes Series against Australia.
