Cronulla Sharks' coach Craig Fitzgibbon has made an unexpected move for the 2026 season by bringing on French rugby legend Frédéric Michalak to the coaching staff.
Michalak isn't a stranger to the Sharks; he previously served as a kicking and skills consultant for the club in 2022.
As a fly half in rugby union, Michalak had an illustrious career with France, earning 77 caps over a 15-year span while mostly playing club rugby in France and South Africa.
Currently, he is the head coach at Racing 92 in Europe and is set to join the Sharks after completing his obligations in mid-2026.
His previous experience with the Sydney Roosters, along with his focus on NRL and kicking, suggests he will work closely with players like Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall, including the club's emerging young halves.
Fitzgibbon emphasized the significance of Michalak's background, stating, "Fred's experience on the international stage will be an invaluable asset for the squad, especially heading into the business end of next season."
