'Unfair': Sharks coach stands by Hynes after missed opportunity

In a game that had fans on the edge of their seats, Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon stood by Nicho Hynes after a nail-biting Origin audition that didn't quite go his way.

Despite not being the hero in the final moments, Fitzgibbon refused to put the blame on the halfback for his missed sideline conversion after the final whistle in the Sharks' heartbreaking 30-28 loss to the Dolphins.

Early on, Wayne Bennett's team surged ahead with four quick tries in the first 24 minutes, leaving Fitzgibbon's squad playing catch-up.

However, the Sharks showed incredible determination and managed to take the lead after 52 minutes.

A moment of brilliance from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow tore through the Sharks' defense, seemingly sealing the win for the Dolphins.

But a late try from Sione Katoa gave Hynes a chance to level the score and push the game into extra time.

Despite the pressure on Hynes to deliver a standout performance and keep his State of Origin dreams alive, his missed conversion from the sideline caused a stir on social media, with many questioning his ability to be the clutch player needed for the NSW No.

Fitzgibbon, however, remained steadfast in his support for Hynes during the post-match press conference, deflecting any doubts cast on his halfback's capabilities.
